A new home for the US Ends .com blog

Welcome to the new location of the US Ends .com blog.  Eventually the legacy posts will be moved over here (and of course any new posts will be made here).  The original US Ends .com blog was established in Dec. 2016.  As I stated at that time:

"...the primary intention is to provide more ways for people to be informed when an update is made to the website. Additionally, the blog provides a platform for presenting interesting topics that may not have enough material to warrant a dedicated web page."

A decade later, the rationale noted above still applies, although providing updates has really become only a secondary consideration.  I would say the primary motivation now is the ongoing need for a platform where I can discuss random topics that do not intuitively fit into the structure of the main US Ends .com website.

At the time of this writing, it has been 50 years since the US 24 designation was cancelled between Grand Junction and Minturn, CO, leaving only US 6 along that stretch.  Nevertheless, some locals (particularly along the segment around Glenwood Springs, New Castle, Silt, and Rifle) still refer to the old road as "Highway 6 & 24". US 97 in... Alaska?

AASHO approved it too... but only if specific criteria were met. mockup shield courtesy of Michael Summa Established in late 1926, the northern terminus of US 97 is at the US-Canada border between Oroville WA and Osoyoos BC. In 1953 British Columbia changed some of their route designations, including BC 97, which now begins at the same border crossing as US 97 and continues all the way up to the boundary of the Yukon Territory. In 1959 Alaska became one of the United States, and in 1964 the recently-formed Alaska Dept. of Highways sent an application to AASHO requesting the US 97 designation in their state. Shape-shifting US routes

In other words, these routes bear no resemblance (or very little resemblance) to the route that originally carried the same number. A subset of these shape-shifting routes could be considered "Grandfather's Axe highways".
